Edmund Claxton (1817-1891) in his early days worked as a bookseller with Stoddart and Atherton. In 1833 he was employed by John Grigg and later Grigg and Elliott, the well known Philadelphia publisher. Of note is that George Remsen was also with Grigg from 1828. In 1846 Remsen and Claxton were made partners in the newly named Grigg, Elliott and Co. firm. This latter firm was bought out by J. B. Lippincott in 1850 and renamed Lippincott, Grambo & Co. In 1868 Claxton, Remsen, and Haffelfinger left Lippincott to form their own firm.

Charles Haffelfinger (1827-1885) was born in Philadelphia. He apprenticed with the Grigg, Elliott firm as well as its successor, Lippincott, Grambo & Co. In 1858 he became a partner in J. B. Lippincott & Co. He left in 1868 along with Claxton and Remsen to form the new firm noted here.

George Remsen died in 1880. Edmund Claxton continued the firm under the name of E. Claxton & Co. taking in as his partner, his son, Robert Claxton. Haffelfinger worked for a couple of years as a salesman for E. Clayton & Co. before ill health forced him into retirement. This firm failed secondary to financial setbacks in 1884. Its stock and plates were sold at auction in June of 1884.

* No relationship exists between Edmund Claxton and James S. Claxton, the Philadelphia publisher and the successor to Wm. S. and Alfred Martien.
