Francis Blake, Portland, Maine
Francis Blake operated his namesake publishing house and book store in Portland, Maine between 1855 and 1859. It succeeded Carter (Ezra Carter, Jr.) & Blake. Blake had previously been publisher of the "Norway Advertiser" in the 1840's. The store also sold wrapping paper, account books, blank books, etc. It was well known for its publications of Town's Series of Reading Books and Spellers, other school books and medical, legal, and theological reference books. It was succeeded by Bailey & Noyes after Blake's death in 1859. James Noyes, later of Bailey & Noyes, had been a clerk in the Francis Blake company.
Francis Blake published one chapbook series for children. The exact
date is unknown but it was sometime between 1855-1858.
