Pascal Loomis (1826-1878) was a native of Hartford, Connecticut. He
worked as an engraver and was a named partner in Loomis and Annin in
1858 and Loomis & Hewet in 1859. He moved to San Francisco in
1860. He was a principal in the Brown, Loomis & Co. firm which
appears to have been established in about late 1856.
The Brown, Loomis and Loomis firms published three juvenile series.
Loomis' Illuminated
Household Stories for Little Folks
Loomis' Fairy Tales for
Little Ones
Loomis Illuminated Classics
In December, 1856 Brown, Loomis & Co. purchased the copyright of
"Household Stories for Little Folks" from H. W. Hewet. H. W. Hewet, a
publisher located at 12 Dutch Street, had published a ten title
series: "Hewet's Illuminated Household Stories for Little Folks".
Loomis & Co. had done some of the printing and engraving for
Hewet's series.
Brown, Loomis & Co. published a ten volume first series and an
unknown number of volumes second series. Later in about 1857 Loomis
& Co. published the titles after it succeeded Brown, Loomis &
Co.
James Miller published the exact text and illustrations of some of the
Brown, Loomis books in 1859 in its "Miller's Illuminated Household
Stories for Little Folks."
