Daniel Burgess & Co., New York
"Paine & Burgess" was located in Hartford as early as 1827. It appears it was a lottery and exchange business at that time. In 1831 the company announced that it was also starting a Grocery and Commission business. In the mid-1830's while in Hartford Burgess also published schoolbooks as Daniel Burgess & Co.
Also of note is the firm of Paine, Burgess & Co. established in 1827 by John Paine, Daniel Burgess and Joseph B. Gay. It was not a book publisher / seller but rather a company that conducted the Lottery and Exchange Business in Philadelphia.
Beginning in 1845 "Paine & Burgess" was publishing books at 62 John Street in New York City. By January, 1846 the firm had moved to 60 John Street.
In 1847 Isaac H. Cady bought out the interest of Paine and the new firm was styled Cady & Burgess. Cady had previously been in Providence as a bookseller, publisher and stationer.
The firm dissolved in 1852. Thereafter Daniel Burgess & Co. with a new partner, Richard A. Storrs, operated between 1853 and 1856. The latter outfit mostly published school books. On May 13, 1856 at the age of 52 Daniel Burgess "died very suddenly … congestion of the lungs".
Daniel Burgess & Co. published one known series for juveniles. The same titles in the same format had previously been published by John R. Bolles. (See: 19th Century Juvenile Series - John R. Bolles) M. F. C. Marsh, a New York outfit, published these books in the 1860's.
