Robert Lindsay (1803-1892) in his early years worked with book
auctioneers. He was associated with De Silver, Herse and Lindsay
beginning in 1829. This firm was a bookbinder as well as a publisher
and bookseller. Lindsay bought out the interest of the bookbinding part
of the company sometime thereafter. Subsequently he and Presley
Blakiston establshed the new company.
At first the firm of Lindsay & Blakiston was in the bookselling,
bookbinding and general book publishing business. By the early 1860's
the firm began to specialize in the publication of medical books. In
1882 Lindsay retired and the firm soon thereafter added Blakiston's son
Kenneth as a partner.
