D. & J. Sadlier & Co., New York
Denis Sadlier (1816-1869) founded D. & J. Sadlier and Co. with his brother James (1821-1885) in 1837. After emigrating from Ireland in 1830, they established a bookbinding business in 1837 and became publishers the following year.
The output was predominantly geared toward the Catholic population. By 1853, Sadler was the largest publishing house in the United States. It published the "New York Tablet" between 1858 and 1881. The latter periodical was managed by the prolific authoress, Mary Anne Sadlier, wife of James Sadlier.
James Sadlier died in 1869. Denis died in 1885 but during the few years preceding his demise, there were a series of financial reverses. Mary Anne Sadlier had a significant management role into the 1890’s but eventually the company was taken over by William Sadlier, Denis' son. William had set up his own namesake textbook publishing company in 1874.
P. J. Kenedy bought most of the D. & J. Sadlier's copyrights in the 1895. The rest of the firm's assets were sold to P. J. Kenedy in 1912.

D. & J. Sadlier & Co. published a number of series meant for juvenile readers.
The list below includes series that are included in various Sadlier
advertisements and catalogue listings. I cannot find any evidence that
Sadlier actually published any of these sets. On the other hand, the
Publishing company Henry McGrath did publish a number of these
libraries. See: 19th
