R. Shugg & Co., New York
Richard Shugg (1831-1904) was a native of Cornwall, England. After coming to America he published a number of juvenile books between 1871 and 1873 which were printed by the Rutherford Park Press. Prior to that, beginning in the 1850's, he was noted as an engraver as well as a manufacturer of toy money, checkerboards, alphabet cards, etc. In his later years he did photo engraving with the New York World newspaper.
Richard Shugg's cousins, Proctor Shugg and James Shugg owned an engraving firm named Shugg Brothers. These firms were separate entities. Previously Proctor Shugg along with Richard Shugg and Geo. R. Collins had been partners in the R. Shugg & Co. firm.
All of Shugg's books were listed under the "Juvenile Classics" name. Most of its publications were in series. All of the books were published in either 1871 and / or 1872.
