U. D. Ward (1818-1879) began in the book business in 1850 as a depository agent for the American and Foreign Bible Society. In 1868 he became a bookseller for the American Baptist Publication Society. By 1872 he had resigned the latter position and was publishing on his namesake imprint.
At the age of 14 James L. Drummond (1849-) entered the service of U. D. Ward. He was a native of Glasgow, Scotland. In 1879 after U. D. Ward died, Ward's son, Samuel H. D. Ward joined Drummond to form Ward & Drummond. Samuel Ward retired in 1897 and Drummond carried on under the same firm name.
These firms published a number of series for juveniles.
