Illustrated by A. Burnham Shute
The "First Series" was named as such when the "Second Series" was
started. The globe cover notes which series the book belongs to. The
"First Series" is only noted on the covers of the books after the
Second Series was begun in 1895.
There are two formats. The first "globe" cover was the first edition
for all books prior to 1896. The boat cover was used for the first
editions after late 1896 (Four Young Explorers and Pacific Shores) as
well as subsequent reprints of all the series' titles thereafter.
Format 1. Cloth. Red or mustard noted. Cover has a picture of the
globe, Eiffel Tower, mountains, etc.
Format 2. Cloth. Red. Sailboat on the cover. First edition format for
Four Young Explorers and Pacific Shores. (1896 and later)
