Volume #1 was published by John R. Anderson & Co. Volumes #2 and #3 were first published by John R. Anderson and Henry S. Allen. Later copies of #2 and #3 were published by John R. Anderson & Co.
Volume 1 initially was not part of a series. Later when title #2 was published, the books were noted to be part of this series. In 1884 the set was sold in a box called the "President Library".

a picture of a boy on horseback and Garfield being sworn in as

Cloth. Various colors. Gilt lettering on the spine and cover.
Cover has a picture of a boy splitting a log and Lincoln at a table
signing the Emancipation Proclamation.
7" x 5". (First edition has perfect type on the "99" on that page)

As opposed to Format 1, the cover does not note the name of the series
