The first editions of these titles were published by R. W. Carroll
& Company. The Porter & Coates editions were first published
in 1873.
Sometime between 1879 and 1881 these six titles were noted as the
Frank and Archie Series. Thereafter the reprints of both Coates' firms
noted the Gun-Boat Series on the cover but the Frank and Archie Series
on the title page. This series was reprinted by Henry T. Coates &
Company in the Format 3 style.
Format 1 Volume 1-6
Cloth. Green, maroon and orange. Front cover has a picture of a gun
boat with the name of the series written on it. The spine has gilt
lettering and a gilt picture of a gunboat. 6.875" x 5".
Format 2
Cloth. Green. Blindstamped cover. Gilt spine block lettering and gilt
gunboat illustration on the spine. 7" x 5".
Format 3 (Volumes 1-6) This format was first noted in 1888.
Cloth. Blue. Front cover has a picture of a gun boat. Spine has a gilt
letter box. Also picture of a gun boat. 7.75" x 5.25"
