One Syllable Series by Mary Godolphin (Lucy Aikin)
1. Robinson Crusoe (six illustrations on plates) |
2. Evenings at Home (eight illustrated plates) |
3. Swiss Family Robinson (eight illustrated plates) |
4. Pilgrim's Progress (eight illustrated plates) |
The American News Company published this series in 1869. Only
Robinson Crusoe has a date on the title page. The other titles were
presumably published in 1869 (at the latest in 1870) by this firm.
They all have text and ads exactly the same as the George Routledge
titles of the same name with the exception of Robinson Crusoe.
The American News's Robinson Crusoe (see below) cover does not have
the familiar two circle pattern. In addition the text is in two
columns per page. Of note the text is identical to the Godolphin
Routledge book published in 1868. It is not known whether this
publisher also printed a Robinson Crusoe with a cover like the
Routledge books. It is also unknown whether this unusual cover was
also published by Routledge.
Cloth. Various colors. Gilt lettering on the cover and the spine.
