Volumes #2-3 were published by Henry T. Coates & Co. as first
editions. Volume #1 however was first published by Fords, Howard and
Hulbert in 1899 as a non series book. Coates later reprinted "Dorsey".
When "Coffin Island" was released in 1897, it was not part of a series.
In 1902 "Dorsey" and "Jim and Joe" books were also non series books but
by 1904 they were combined into the True Grit Series.
I have only seen two Henry T. Coates' books in this series at this
time. I believe the Coffin Island book below is the format that was
used in the series. The Jim and Joe 1902 title is the first edition but
as a non series book.
Series format. Cloth has a picture of an Indian. Spine has a gilt
letter box with the title. 12 mo.
