John Allyn, Boston
John Allyn established his namesake business in 1868. Publications included mainly the classics and other educational volumes. Allyn took over the publishing business of Sever, Francis & Co. in 1871
In 1888 George A. Bacon, a high school principal in Syracuse and publisher of "The Academy", joined Allyn to form Allyn & Bacon. This firm was active well into the late 20th century.
