H. S. and J. Applegate succeeded George Conclin in March, 1849.

James Applegate (1911-1897) was a native of New Jersey. Early on he apprenticed as a blacksmith. He moved to Cincinnati and associated with Henry S. Applegate in the H. S. & J. Applegate firm. Henry S. Applegate died in 1852 of "pulmonary consumption". With the death of Henry S. Applegate, the firm was renamed Applegate & Co. with the partners James Applegate, Samuel Flickinger, Arthur H. Pounsford and John B. Ryan. In about 1858 James Applegate left the firm and was involved in farming and real estate.

In 1867 Applegate, Pounsford & Company succeeded Applegate and Co. The latter firm was mostly involved with bookselling and the publication of blank books. It was succeeded by A. H. Pounsford & Co. in 1875. In 1878 Pounsford moved on with the blank book manufacturers, Mallory & Webb.
