Bailey & Noyes, Portland, Maine

Frederick W. Bailey and James Noyes established Bailey & Noyes in 1859. Noyes, a native of Portland, Maine, had previously worked for Sanborn & Carter. They started as a retail establishment having bought out the business of Francis Blake. Subsequently it was involved in publishing and bookbinding.

An 1866 fire had forced the firm into a new large four story building. In addition to books, Bailey & Noyes represented several piano makers including Chickering, Bradbury and others.

There is evidence that this firm published two series of chapbooks for children/juveniles.

The first series which was not named was published sometime between 1859 and 1862 based on the founding of the company(1859) and an inscription on a book (1862). I am arbitrarily calling it Bailey & Noyes' Chapbooks.
