Brentano's
The Brentano's bookstore was opened in New York by August Brentano in 1853. The first location was at a newsstand in front of the New York Hotel. Brentano’s activities included branch stores established in Washington , D. C. (1883) , Chicago (1884), Paris (1887), London (1889) and other sites. Twentieth century stores are too numerous to mention.
The Brentano's store had many different departments including the French Dept., Stationery Dept., Music Department, Periodical Department and Publishing Department. The publishing part of the business in regards to works for juveniles was a minor concern.
Initially just a bookstore, Brentano's began publishing on their own imprint in 1885.
