Bridgman & Childs, Northampton, Mass.

Henry Childs (1818-1885) was born in Deerfield, Massachusetts. After graduating from Yale he taught in Cleveland, Ohio. He worked as a book agent for A. S. Barnes & Co.

Sidney E. Bridgman (1827-1906) was born in Northampton. He began his book career in 1844 with the J. H. Butler firm and in 1849 was made a partner in the new Butler & Bridgman outfit. When Butler left to join the Cowperthwaite & Co. publisher of Philadelphia, he sold his interest to Stephen W. Hopkins and Henry Childs. The new firm of Hopkins, Bridgman and Company operated from 1851 to 1859. Bridgman & Childs succeeded the latter firm in 1860 when Hopkins withdrew.

In 1883 Childs retired from the firm and the company continued as S. E. Bridgman & Co. Childs continued as a book binder and blank book manufacturer.

Bridgman & Childs published one series for juveniles.
The four books consisted of unrelated short stories.
