G. W. Carleton & Co.

In 1857 George W. Carleton joined Edward P. Rudd and his father, George R. Rudd, to establish Rudd & Carleton. Edward P. Rudd died in 1861 and in that same year George R. Rudd retired. Thus the remaining partner formed G. W. Carleton. In 1867 Carleton incorporated becoming G. W. Carleton & Co.

(A number of references give 1871 as the incorporation date. This is based on an article from the 1911 Bookseller, Newsdealer and Stationer. But numerous Carleton title pages beginning in 1867 note G. W. Carleton & Co. There are books however after 1868 that do not have “Co." associated with the imprint name.)

George W. Dillingham, who joined Carleton's house in 1864 and was subsequently made the head clerk in the firm became a partner in 1871. Dillingham's company succeeded G. W. Carleton & Co. in 1886 as G. W. Dillingham Co.
