Henry Harrington Carter and T. William Carter were the sons of T. H. Carter, a well known and prolific Boston publisher.

H. H. Carter (1845-), after high school, worked at the paper house of Carter Brothers & Co. He established his own business, a retail stationery firm, in 1862. Late he began a new outfit on Beacon Street with his brother T. W. Carter. In 1869 T. W. Carter retired.

William H. Petee joined H. H. Carter to form Carter & Petee in 1872
In 1873 Petee withdrew and H. H. Carter continued alone until 1885 when James L. Karrick joined to become H. H. Carter & Karrick.
