Steele and Durrie, Albany
D. S. Durrie, Albany
Daniel Steele Durrie (1819-1892) was born in Albany. In 1844 he
joined his uncle (Levi Steele) in the bookselling and publishing
business. In 1848 their store was lost in the great fire of Albany. In
1850 Durrie moved to Madison, Wisconsin where, in 1854, he opened the
Madison Book Store.
The firm of Steele and Durrie started in 1844 and published until 1848.
It was succeeded by D. S. Durrie. The later firm dissolved in 1850. It
was succeeded by Gray & Sprague.

These two firms published two series for juveniles. Of note is that
a number of other publishing houses printed these same two series.
