Frederick Turner and Abraham Fisher established Turner & Fisher
in Philadelphia in 1834. Previously Fisher had worked as a
printer/publisher. The early Fisher firm mainly published plays:
"Turner's American Stage".
By 1835 the company was also publishing with a New York imprint. It
sold and printed comic almanacs, songsters, prints, plays and
children's books mainly of the toy variety.
Although Turner & Fisher was active to some extent until 1856,
children's books were not published after 1848. In terms of book
publishing it was initially succeeded by James Fisher which was active
from 1838-1848 and then in early 1849 by J. & W. R. Fisher. By
later in 1849 it was succeeded by Fisher & Brothers. Fisher &
Brothers was a short-lived enterprise run by James Fisher, Abraham
Fisher and William Fisher. Fisher & Brother (1849-mid 1860's) then
followed Fisher & Brothers.
James Fisher published an 1848 catalogue which listed several series
that had been published by Turner & Fisher. Whether the books were
actually solely published on James Fishers' imprint or rather this
firm was a co-publisher has not yet been established. These relevant
series note "JF" in the series list below.
The Baltimore location of Fisher & Brother was dissolved in 1865
and it was succeeded by Fisher & Denison (Alfred J Fisher / Thomas
Denison). It stopped business operations in 1872.
Most of the books published by these houses can be approximately dated

The series published by these firms are listed below. In many
instances the actual books do not identify a series and there are no
catalogue listings extant. Thus, a number of these series are
incomplete as to the book title listings.
The series below are listed in the James Fisher catalogue but have
not been seen. It is unclear whether these series were also
published by Turner & Fisher. This is as opposed to the series
that are shown directly above with the "JF" after the series name.
