Gates, Stedman & Co., New York
In 1833 Elias Gray was in Albany, New York running a bookstore. Gray moved to Troy in about 1836 where he remained as a publishing and book store owner until 1844.
Gates & Stedman was established in New York in 1845 by Elias Gates and Wm. S. Stedman. That firm was succeeded by Gates, Stedman & Co. in 1849. Elias Gates, Samuel Hopkins and Wm. S. Stedman were the principles in Gates, Stedman & Co. Gates, Stedman & Co. was out of business in 1851. In 1850 Gates published on his namesake imprint in New York City. By 1858 Elias Gates was back in Albany as a bookseller / publisher.
