John Grigg (1792-1864) was a native of Cornwall, England who emigrated to America at the age of 12. He entered the business in 1816 of the Philadelphia booksellers Benjamin Warner and Jacob Johnson (Warner and Johnson, established in 1810) as a clerk. When Warner died in 1821, Grigg took over the Warner business as Warner and Grigg and wound up its affairs by 1823.

By 1823 he had begun his own namesake business and because of its massive growth, he brought in Hugh Elliot (-1864) as a partner in 1831. in 1846 Henry Grambo, Edward Claxton and George Remsen were added as partners and the firm name was changed to Grigg, Elliot & Co.
In 1850 the two senior named partners sold out to the other partners and Joshua B. Lippincott with the new firm becoming Lippincott, Grambo & Co.
