H. H. Hawley & Co., Hartford, Ct.
Hawley was born in Lewis County, New York in 1817. In 1837 he gave
up his teaching career and joined the Utica bookselling and publishing
company of Bennett and Bright. When Bennett retired in 1846, Bennett,
Backus & Hawley was established. By 1847 H. H. Hawley and Co. was
noted as a Utica publisher and bookseller. In 1849 Hawley set up his
publishing firm in Hartford, Connecticut and maintained his Utica house
with Hawley, Fuller & Co.
Hawley's published two juvenile series.

Earlier Sorin & Ball, a Philadelphia publisher, had printed
twelve books in this series. It is unknown whether the other eight
titles that Sorin & Ball had promised were ever printed.
It appears that there were only six titles in Hawley's series as
compared to the 12 (or 20) in Sorin and Ball's.
Formats.
Cloth. Various colors. Blindstamped. Gilt lettering and design on
the spine. 6.25" x 4".
A more expensive format with extra cloth was noted. Numerous
illustrations. 7.5". 1837.

These books were previously published by B. B. Mussey in 1840 and W.
Robinson, a New York publisher, in 1844. They are basically
dictionaries of the title's subject material.
