Kerr, Doughty & Lapham, Detroit
The publishing firm of Kerr, Doughty, & Lapham was established
as a publishing and wholesale book and stationery house in Detroit in
1853. Within months the firm changed to Kerr & Doughty. Noah D.
Lapham moved from his native Cayuga County, New York to Detroit in the
early 1850's. He worked in the book business subsequently. He died at
the age of 66 in 1892.
Kerr, Doughty, & Lapham published one juvenile series.
This firm published these titles in 1853. The first editions were
published in 1852 by Alden, Beardsley & Co. This set was also
published by Burnett & Bostwick, S. H. & G. Burnett, Alden and
Beardsley, John E. Beardsley and Hurd and Houghton. The first editions
note Cousin Cicely as the author.
These books also have a title page from Alden, Beardsley & Co. I
suspect that the latter firm supplied the books in their entirety to Kerr,
Doughty, & Lapham which just inserted its own title page.
