Kiggins & Kellogg, New York
In 1847 Henry Kiggins and A. W. Kellogg entered a partnership and
formed the above named company. Kellogg retired in 1866 and the company
was renamed Kiggins, Tooker & Company with new partners: Charles P.
Tooker and Isaac C. Kiggins. In 1882 the firm was succeeded by Kiggins
and Tooker Company. The latter company was still publishing blank books
and journals into the teens.
The firm was best known for its blank books and fancy leather goods.
The chap books listed below seem to almost have been an afterthought.
Henry Kiggins (1815-1905) was a native of Elizabeth, New Jersey. He
worked in the bookstore of John J. Bryant in Elizabeth, New Jersey
beginning in 1832. In 1836 he bought the bookstore business and ran it
until 1846. At that time he founded his company in Elizabeth and one
year later in New York City entered into a partnership with A. W.
Kellogg.
Charles P. Tooker was a native New Yorker who began his career in the
book world with Levitt and Co. He died in 1885.
Company Addresses

Kiggins & Kellogg published four juvenile series. Each of these
four twelve title series were called the Redfield's Toy Books. J. S.
Redfield, another New York City publisher, first published these series
in 1850. Redfield was still publishing them, as late as 1853. Thus
Kiggins & Kellogg publications either in 1854 or 1855.
All of the books are in wraps.
Numerous colors have been seen.
All are illustrated.
Every cover has an illustration. Some of the titles have been seen with
different cover illustrations and some of the same illustrations were
used in both Series 1 and Series 2.
Based on the address on the book, approximate dating can be done. Books
with the 88 John Street address on the cover and title page were
published in 1855 or earlier whereas the books with the William Street
address were published in 1856 or later. There are some transitional
book with the John Street address on the title page but the William
Street address on the cover. These were probably published in 1856.
Examples of each series are shown on these pages: First Series Second Series Third Series Fourth Series |
