Lockwood, Brooks & Co., Boston
John S. Lockwood and Walter Brooks left the dissolved Noyes, Holmes
& Co. firm in May, 1875 and along with Phineas S. Tobey established
Lockwood, Brooks & Co.
This new firm basically succeeded three companies: Crosby & Nichols, Nichols & Noyes, and Noyes, Holmes & Co.
Here is a postcard from 1878:
The firm failed financially in March, 1878. At that time it
was about $120,000 in debt. By May, the creditors had decided to accept
a 70% reduction in money owed. On June 5, 1878 the company was
reorganized such that John S. Lockwood alone was to continue the firm's
business.
Although it continued to publish books, from June, 1878
forward its main business was a bookseller and stationer until it
dissolved in 1884.
