McCarthy & Company, New York

Charles J. McCarthy and Clarence E. Reed were the principles in McCarthy & Company.
McCarthy & Company, described as a "fancy goods dealer" moved to the 26 University address in 1892 from 853 Broadway.
By September of 1892 creditors of McCarthy & Company were meeting because of financial issues. It does not appear that this firm was active after that point in time.

There is evidence that this outfit published one series for juveniles - McCarthy's Large Quarto Series.

It was introduced by McCarthy & Co. with the publications of Volumes #1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 in about March, 1892.

McCarthy & Company also noted that it had in preparation for publication by April, 1892 a series of "Easy Reading Histories" which included "American Presidents and Statesmen", "American Battles on Land and Sea" the "United States", "England", "France", "Young Folks' Story of the New Testament", and "Young Folks' Story of the Old Testament". It appears that several of the "Easy Reading Histories" actually were made part of the "Large Quarto Series" and that the "Easy Reading Series" was not published as such.

Three of these books were published in the same format by Barr-Dinwiddie & Co. (#1, 2 & 3) Some of the McCarthy books have Barr-Dinwiddie Co. title pages with McCarthy noted on the book cover whereas other McCarthy books have McCarthy on both the title page as well as the cover. Most likely McCarthy got the books in their entirety from Barr-Dinwiddie and placed its name on the cover and, in some later issues, on the title page as well.
