Morrill, Higgins & Co., Chicago

In April, 1892 Belford, Clarke & Company sold its stock, plates, copyrights and goodwill to the new Chicago house of Morrill, Higgins & Co. The new firm planned to concentrate on the popular literature previously published by Belford, Clarke in addition to encyclopedias and subscription books. In August, 1893 a financing issue caused the firm to go into receivership. In December, 1893 W. B. Conkey Company bought all of its plates and copyrights.

Beside the two series for juveniles that this firm printed, it also published two multiauthored, multivolume company paperback series: Idylwild Series, Midland Series. Morrill, Higgins and Company

Series for Juveniles:

Young Folks Travels by Anonymous (D. C. Eddy)

1. Young Folks' Travels in Europe
2. Young Folks' Travels in Asia and Africa

Morrill, Higgins & Co. published this series in 1892. Clearly it used the plates from Belford, Clarke & Co. since that name is noted on the cover and the books are exactly the same as the 1890 editions published by Belford, Clarke & Co.

This series has a complicated history. See here for much more information: All Aboard Series

Lithographed illuminated board covers on cloth. Different for each title. 8” x 10”.

Wallace Stanley Series

1. Our Week Afloat; or, How We Explored the Pequonset River
2. Down the Bay; or, Joe and I on Salt Water

This series was printed by Morrill, Higgins & Co. in 1892. Previously the books in the same formats were published by Belford, Clarke & Co. The Morrill, Higgins books note Belford, Clarke & Co. at the base of the spine on the book but Morrill, Higgins & Co. as the imprint on the title page.
