Otis, Broaders & Co., Boston
Edward R. Broaders (1810-1882) joined James Otis in 1836 to form this firm. Previously in 1832 Broaders had joined William Hyde and Asa Rand as a partner in the William Hyde & Co. outfit. The latter company being involved in publishing, bookselling and stationary. By 1834 Broaders had associated with Otis Clapp as Clapp and Broaders. By 1835 Broaders had gone into business on his own as E. R. Broaders.
In January, 1849 Crosby & Nichols purchased Otis, Broaders & Co. periodical subscriber list. By 1850 the firm had dissolved and Broaders was working for the Phillips, Sampson Co. firm.
Otis, Broaders & Co. published one series for juveniles.
In 1843 it printed the four Philosophy books of the fourteen volume
Rollo Series by Jacob Abbott.
In 1837 it had published the second book in the series, “Rollo
Learning to Read” with Jas. H. Weeks as the co-publisher. It is not
known but presumed it also published “Rollo Learning to Talk” at that
time. There is no evidence that it ever published books #3-10 in the
Rollo Series. See: Rollo
