Deacon John Durrie (1792-1857) and Henry Peck along with Peck's son Lorenzo established the Durrie & Peck New Haven firm in 1818. Durrie died in 1857 and at that time the outfit was succeeded by Peck, White & Peck (Henry C. Peck, William White and Lorenzo Peck). In 1863 Henry's son, Horace, who was active as a publisher in Philadelphia purchased Peck, White & Peck. In 1867 because of health issues, Horace's son, Henry H. Peck took over the business. (Reference: History of the City of New Haven by Edward E. Atwater, 1887.)
Because of the close relationship it is not surprising that Horace C. Peck companies co-published at times with Durrie & Peck.
In Philadelphia, Horace C. Peck (son of Henry Peck) was involved with several book publishing firms. Cornelius Smith and Peck established Smith & Peck in about 1841. It dissolved in 1845. Loomis & Peck succeeded Smith & Peck and was active between 1846-1849. After Smith & Peck dissolved, Horace C. Peck published on his namesake imprint in 1850.
Horace C. Peck started a publishing concern with Theodore Bliss in 1850: H. C. Peck and Theo. Bliss.
Theodore Bliss (1822-1910) had previously been associated with the Northampton, Massachusetts bookstore of J. H. Butler. After his apprenticeship was over in 1844, he joined Butler's brother's bookstore Butler and Williams located in Philadelphia. When William died in 1846, Bliss went out on his own as a publisher, Theodore Bliss & Co. This venture was short-lived however when Butler offered him a partnership. Bliss and Horace C. Peck established their company in 1851.
The firm of Peck and Bliss was dissolved in May, 1862. Thereafter Bliss carried on as Theodore Bliss & Company until his retirement in 1873.
