Wm. Raine, Baltimore
Not much is known about this publisher. It was active from about 1838 to 1845. Known as a book & job printer and lithographer, the firm moved from 132 Market Street to 74 Baltimore Street (corner of Holiday and Baltimore Streets) in 1838.
This company published two newspapers. The "German Correspondent", a weekly newspaper which was established by William Raine's son, Frederick, in 1841 and the "Democratic Whig" in 1844.
William Raine died in 1879
Wm. Raine published two series of chapbooks. Both series are called
"Coloured Toys" but one is square 16 mo., whereas the other is 12 mo.
Both series were published in the exact same format as the earlier
Bayly & Burns' series. Of note is that both firms were at one time
at 132 Market Street. Bayly & Burns was there between 1837 and
1839. The relationship between the publishers is unknown.
The earlier Raine's books note 132 Market Street under the imprint on
the cover indicating an 1838 publication. This address on the cover is
uncommon. The more frequently noted address of 74 Baltimore Street
indicates a publication date ca. 1839-1842.
