A. Roman & Co., San Francisco
Anton Roman (1828-1903) was born in Bavaria. He emigrated to Northern
California and worked as a miner. In 1853 he opened a bookstore in
Shasta City, California. He moved his store to San Francisco in 1857.
In addition to his bookstore he established a publishing business in
about 1859. As the years went on Roman was well known not only as a
book publisher but also as a photographic album producer. In 1868 he
founded the Overland Monthly which was a very well known magazine. His
firm, despite the occasional financial setback, was active until 1888.
This publishing house published four juvenile series.
The Golden Gate Series and the Inglenook Series are partially made up
of books that were previously within the "Stories from Gold Land
Series". These books have the second title page which indicates the
series.
