Shepard & Gill, Boston (1872-1874)
Henry L. Shepard & Co., Boston (1874-1875)
William F. Gill and Company, Boston (1874-1878?)
The Shepard & Gill firm was established in October, 1872. Henry
L. Shepard (1843--?) had previously been with J. E. Tilton & Co.
William F. Gill had been associated with James R. Osgood & Co.
In March, 1874 the partnership between Shepard and Gill dissolved. The plates of Shepard & Gill were divided.
Henry L. Shepard & Co. became the formal successor to
Shepard & Gill. Other partners in the new firm were George H. S.
Driver and Charles I. Shepard. This house published several Jules Verne
first editions. It also published the magazine, American Homes. It had
offices in Chicago and New York as well as Boston. It appears by 1876
this firm was no longer publishing and in 1878 Shepard moved to Chicago
to join the editorial staff of the Alliance.
Also in 1874 William F. Gill (1844-1917) assumed the
management of the "old stand" of Shepard and Gill at 151 Washington
Street and continued in the publishing business. Mr. Henry B. Cram
participated in the new business. No publications of this firm have
been noted after 1878.
These three related firms published a number of juvenile series.
