John L. Shorey, Boston
John L. Shorey (1820-1909), a native of Maine, settled in Lynn, Massachusetts at the age of 16. After a career as a teacher in Lynn, he moved to Boston and in 1859 began a book business. In 1867 he established "The Nursery", which was a periodical for the very young. It was incredibly successful being one of the first periodicals of its kind. In November, 1880 it merged with "Our Little Ones" to form "Our Little Ones and the Nursery" which was edited by Oliver Optic.

These books were published by John L. Shorey and the contents come from previously published “The Nursery” periodicals. The dates after the title are when the book was published not when the content appeared in "The Nursery". #7 and #8 were advertised but it is unclear whether they were published.
First three volumes were sold individually and as a boxed set.
