S. J. Sylvester, New York / Pittsburgh
In 1830 the business of N. and S. Sylvester, a New York City lottery and exchange business was dissolved. S. J. Sylvester continued in an exchange and Commission office.
Sylvester J. Sylvester had a branch office/ store in Pittsburgh and Louisville. In 1831 S. J. Sylvester advertised the sale of books and playing cards at his store in Pittsburgh. He was noted as a publisher in 1832 as well as a lottery promoter in New York and Pittsburgh.
His publishing and bookselling business in Pittsburgh and Louisville were bought by Charles L. Cook and R. Schoyer in October, 1833.
S. J. Sylvester dissolved in December, 1848.
There is evidence that Sylvester published one set of chapbooks for
juveniles. The date is unclear but since Sylvester’s business in
Pittsburgh was dissolved in 1833 and because other books that
Sylvester published have 1833 on their title pages, it is presumed
that these chapbooks were published in 1833.
