J. E. Tilton and Co., Boston
John E. Tilton and and his brother Stephen Willis Tilton established J. E. Tilton and Co. in 1859. They were the sons of John G. Tilton, a Newburyport publisher and bookseller.
John E. Tilton was a long time sufferer of "consumption" and died in 1866 at the age of 35. The firm of J. E. Tilton & Co. dissolved in 1874 and Stephen Willis Tilton established its successor, S. W. Tilton & Co. The latter outfit operated until at least 1902 but in the latter years was more known for its ink production: Tiltonian Lustre Inks.
Stephen Willis Tilton died at the age of 77 in 1911.
J. E. Tilton and Company. printed a number of series for juveniles. It also published several well known juvenile forty editions which were not part of any series. This included Trowbridge's "Three Scouts" and "Cudjo's Cave" as well as Kingston's "Antony Waymouth" and "Cruise of the Frolic".
