Hayes & Zell, Philadelphia
Thomas Ellwood Zell (1828-1905) was a Philadelphia publisher. Zell
entered the publishing business in 1854 when he bought out the
Troutman interest in Troutman and Hayes. Hayes & Zell were in
business until 1860 when Zell bought out S. C. Hayes. For several
years, beginning in 1861 Zell took over the publishing of the
"Friends' Intelligencer" as the previous publisher, Wm. W. Moore,
retired because of ill health.
T. Ellwood Zell & Co. was active until 1895. In the 1880's it was
well known as a major subscription house. Religious books, atlases,
Bibles and encyclopedias were mainstays with juvenile books a very
small part of the publishing production.
In addition to his publishing efforts Zell founded the community of
Zellwood as well as the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the
United States (MOLLUS).
