George B. Zieber, Philadelphia
As early as 1840 George B. Zieber was a book agent.
The Burgess & Zieber publishing firm was established in 1843 by
George B. Zieber and Wesley F. Burgess. By late in 1843 it had
dissolved with Burgess moving to New York and becoming a partner in
Burgess, Stringer & Co. Zieber remained in Philadelphia as George
B. Zieber & Co. and (G. B. Zieber & Co.). Zieber operated until
1848 at which time Zieber's brother, W. B. Zieber, succeeded him in the
bookselling business. His brother ran Zieber's Great Literary Emporium,
a newspaper and periodical agency.
An interesting side note is that Zieber helped Isaac Merritt Singer
raise money to build a type-carving machine which was completed and
exhibited in Boston in 1850. It was not well received. This venture
failed but subsequently Singer, with the financial help of Zieber and
Orson C. Phelps produced an improved sewing machine, the Singer Sewing
machine.
Zieber published one juvenile series.
When it went out of business, the plates were purchased and the series
published by J. & J. L. Gihon, another Philadelphia firm.
The format of this series was the same for both publishers.
