Lippincott, Grambo & Company published the first editions of all
twelve books in this series in 1851.
The books were sold separately or as a set. Lippincott, Grambo &
Company published copies in 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854 and 1855. Between
1851 and 1853 the books had the same cover format. A new cover was
introduced for the 1854 books. Later J. B. Lippincott & Co. and
Claxton, Remsen & Haffelfinger published these titles both in
single volumes and in combination books which contained two titles.
Format 1. 1851-1853. Scarlet and brown seen. Cloth. Blindstamped with
embossed decorative pattern on the cover with the publisher's name.
Gilt lettering on the spine. 6" x 4".
The 1851 spine design was different from the later 1852 spine. The
cover is the same.
Format 2. 1853-1854. Cloth. Various colors. Blindstamped with embossed
decorative pattern on the cover with the publisher's name. Gilt
lettering and design on the spine. 6" x 4".
