This incredibly popular series was published by a number of firms
after Robert Carter & Brothers went out of business. Four different
Carter formats have been seen. Obviously this is an indicator of the
success of this series.
The exact dates for each format are not known as of yet. Dates that are known are shown.
Format 1 included the first editions of all six titles.
Cloth. Various colors. Blindstamped. Gilt spine lettering.
Latest title page date seen is 1872.
Format 2 Title page dates seen: 1876/1877
Cloth. Green. Black lettering and decoration on the cover. Gilt spine letterboxes. 6.76" x 4.75".
Format 3 Title page dates seen: 1880/ 1881/ 1882
Cloth.
Various colors. A number of different non book specific cover appliqués
have been noted. Cover also has black lettering and decoration. Spine
with gilt letter boxes. 6.75" x 4.5"
Format 4. No title page dates have been seen but ads from 1884 are present.
