Volume one was initially a standalone volume. Because of its popularity, the other three books were written. In 1868 Volumes #1-3 were issued in a boxed set as the "Household Stories of the American Conflict" by N. Tibbals & Co. In 1871 the four volumes were combined into a series by N. Tibbals & Son. Later N. Tibbals & Sons published the series.
