Chatterbox Junior
Published by World Publishing Company
The Chatterbox was first published Dec 1, 1866 in England. Originated by James Johnstone and edited by Rev. John Erskine Clarke (1827-1920) who was the editor until 1902, it started as a weekly consisting of puzzles, vignettes, pictures etc. Initially the yearly bound volumes were just collated weeklies.
Numerous American publishers printed yearly Chatterboxes of various types. By the late 1880's Estes & Lauriat, after extensive litigation, was the only American publisher of the "Chatterboxes".
The World Publishing Company published the Chatterbox Junior. Two editions have been noted: 1876 and 1877-1878. These books were not simply copies of the English editions but were compilations from various sources. (Worthington Co. published a "Chatterbox Junior" beginning in 1878.)
