* Narcissa was first published by Estes and Lauriat in 1894. In
Verona had previously been published in 1892 in the Two Tales
bi-weekly periodical published by "The Two Tales Publishing Company",
Boston.
The Captain January Series was first published in name with the
printing of Marie in 1894.
Captain January was first published in non series form. In 1895 Estes
and Lariat published a new Illustrated Holiday Edition for both
Captain January and Melody.
In 1898 there was a special Centennial Edition of Captain January
published by Dana Estes & Company. There were three formats:
1. Edith de Luxe-
a. 100 copies (#1-100). Bound in 3/4 levant. Autographed and numbered
by the publisher $5.00
b. 900 copies (#101-900). Bound in drawing paper covers and
autographed and numbered by the publisher. $2.50
c. 26 copies with lettered title pages. These copies were not sold and
were specifically for the author and publisher.
a and b originally came with a dust jacket.
Captain January non series editions were published throughout 1890's
with a circular gold insert on the cover.

The edition can be determined by seeing how many thousand are shown on
the title page. If there is no notation of "thousands" and the title
page date is the same as the copyright date, then it is a first
edition. ((Titles #1-7- Estes and Lauriat publisher)
Representative cover pictures are noted below.
Three formats:
1. Cloth. Cover had a book appropriate line drawn picture in each
section of the cover. These books all had dust jackets. See "Some Say"
and "Melody" below. (1893-1899) The 1899 titles were published by Dana
Estes & Company. Volumes #1-7
Format 2. Cloth. Various colors. Rectangle on the front cover within
which is book appropriate illustration. 1900-1901 (except #8
Snow-White) See below.
3. Cloth. Various colors. Full cover line drawn book appropriate
illustration. 1902-1905
