It was not until sixth book was published that these titles were
officially recognized as a series. Previously these books were listed
either as "Good Books for Young Readers" or in a list of Hezekiah
Butterworth books.
Book #1 "The Log School- House" is the only one to have been published
in a different format from the rest of the titles. The 1890 version of
this title is the first edition. It was published in this format in
1890 and 1891. Beginning in 1892 it was also published in the series
format.
Of note is that the series format was also used by Appleton for a
number other titles not in this series and not authored by Butterworth.
Cloth. Various colors. Title and author's name in black lettering on
the front cover. There is a book appropriate picture within a circle
also on the cover. The spine has gilt lettering and a black
decorative pattern. The dust jacket matches the cover.
Format 1
This format (in various colors) was used for the first edition of “The
Log House" as well as a number of 1890-1891 first editions that were
published by Appleton.
These other titles included:

The format for "The Log School-House" is shown here but is not actually
(as noted above) part of the series.
