Introduced as a series by D. Lothrop & Co. in 1870. The titles were unchanged into 1876. Some of the later books used earlier title pages. In 1884 the series had 26 volumes. By 1887 there were 28 books in the series. In 1888 there were thirty titles in the series.

Three formats have been noted.
Format 1:
Cloth. Various colors. Front cover noted title surrounded by gilt. The
spine has gilt lettering. 7" x 4.5"
Format 2 Cloth. Various colors. Gilt picture and decoration on the
cover. Gilt letter box on the spine.
Format 3:
Cloth. Various colors. Silver or gilt letter boxes on the spine and
the cover.
This format was published into the late 1890's when it was printed by
Lothrop Publishing Company. It was published in the 1880's by D.
Lothrop & Co. and D. Lothrop Company.
