Note that the Lippincott, Grambo format still has the 1853 Chambers'
title page.
This series of twenty books was published in 1854.
Cloth. Blindstamped with publisher's initials embossed on the cover.
Spine has gilt decoration and lettering. 5.75" x 4.25".
(A variant 1854 edition has a different gilt spine and embossed
cover decoration.)
Both of these books indicate on the base of the spine a series number -
either the first or the second series. Nowhere in the book is there any
mention of a series number. It is presumed that the twenty volumes are
somehow broken down into a first and a second series. Also it is not
known presently whether the two different formats are indicative of the
different series.
