other formats of these titles were published earlier.
In 1876 the fifth title was added.
In 1881 a second five volume series: Famous Americans- Second Series was published.

These thirteen books were advertised as Lives of Famous Americans. Subsequently in 1884 five books were added and the eighteen volumes became the Popular Biographies series. By 1887 there were twenty titles.
