These titles were previously by other publishers including Cosby and Nichols.
Book #2 when first released by J. B. Lippincott & Co. was called "Fighting the Flames".
The early non-series formats are blindstamped with gilt
decorations and lettering on the spine. Initially these early books had
the PC initials stamped on the center of the front cover. Later the
front cover has a simple decorative embossed pattern.
An early "Dog Crusoe" is shown just below.
In 1871 Books #1, 3 and 4 were listed as Ballantyne books but without a series name.
This
series in name was first published by Porter & Coates in 1873. By
1883 "Fire Brigade" was no longer part of this series.
These titles were also part of the Alta Series-a large
publisher’s series published by both Porter & Coares as well as
Henry T. Coates & Co.
